Duplex and super duplex valves are the standard choice for seawater application due to their fabrication with stainless steel and duplex material. The alloy used in the valve contains both ferrite and austenite, which provides improved strength and chloride resistance properties.
Moreover, super duplex is the higher-alloy, higher performance version. It is better resistant to pitting and chloride stress corrosion cracking than standard duplex.
This article dives deeper into why a duplex butterfly valve and super duplex valves are ideal for seawater applications.
What Is a Duplex Butterfly Valve?
A duplex or seawater-grade butterfly valve is a quarter-turn flow control valve. The disc and body are made from duplex or super duplex stainless steel.
‘Duplex’ refers to the metal alloy rather than the type of butterfly valve. It comprises an austenitic-ferritic microstructure of steel alloy.
- Austenitic steel provides anti-corrosive and tough properties.
- Ferritic steel gives strength against stresses and stress corrosion cracking..
Combined, they give a better-performing material than each one of them individually. Duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 are the two grades that are often specified for seawater butterfly valves.
What is the Difference Between Duplex 2205 vs. Super Duplex 2507?
Both duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 outperform stainless steel. However, they are engineered for different service conditions.
Their key differences lie in the alloy content which directly affects how well they resist chloride attack.
Seawater-service valves in 2205 grade suit moderate environments. Super duplex 2507 handles the most aggressive seawater and brine conditions.
Each grade is measured by PREN, which means Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number. It is a “grade” or a score that engineers use to measure how well a metal can fight off pitting corrosion.
Below are the specifications of each grade:
Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803 / S32205: ASTM A182 F51)

- Contains 22% chromium, 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum.
- Achieves a PREN of approximately 35.
- Tensile strength is roughly double that of 316L stainless steel (~620 MPa vs ~480 MPa).
- Handles brackish water, cooling water loops, and low-salinity coastal intake.
- A cost-effective choice where seawater contact is intermittent or chloride levels stay below 10,000 ppm.
Super Duplex 2507 (UNS S32750: ASTM A182 F53)

- Contains 25% chromium, 7% nickel, 4% molybdenum, and 0.3% nitrogen.
- Achieves a PREN of approximately 43 which meets the ≥40 threshold for continuous seawater service.
- Yield strength reaches approximately 550 MPa, enabling thinner wall sections and lighter assemblies.
- Preferred in reverse osmosis (RO) high-pressure feed trains operating at 55–80 bar.
- Standard material for offshore seawater lift systems, firewater networks, and produced-water injection lines.
Is Duplex Stainless Steel Suitable for Seawater?
Yes, duplex and super duplex grades were specifically developed for chloride-rich and seawater environments.
Standard 316L stainless steel valves start to pit above 1,000 ppm chloride at elevated temperatures. Saline water contains between 19,000 and 35,000 ppm chloride. Hence, it is unsuitable for direct seawater service in most industrial applications.
The solution is to use either duplex 2205 or super duplex 2507 depending on salinity level.
- Duplex 2205 raises the bar to PREN ~35. It covers brackish water and lower-salinity coastal intake. However, for full strength seawater especially at temperatures above 25°C, engineers require PREN ≥ 40.
- Super duplex 2507 is rated at PREN ~43. It resists chloride stress corrosion cracking, a common failure mode for grades like 304 and 316L.
Corrosion Resistance Comparison: Common Valve Materials for Seawater
The table below compares the most common valve materials used in seawater and desalination service.
A higher PREN means better resistance to chloride-induced pitting.
| Material | Cr (Chromium) % | Mo (Molybdenum) % | PREN | Seawater Suitability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 316L Stainless Steel | 16 to 18 | 2 to 3 | ~24 | Not recommended: pitting risk above 1,000 ppm Chloride |
| Duplex 2205 | 22 | 3 | ~35 | Suitable for brackish water and low-salinity coastal intake. |
| Super Duplex 2507 | 25 | 4 | ~43 | Preferred for full-strength seawater and brine service |
| Titanium Grade 2 | — | — | N/A | Superior resistance: significantly higher cost |
Key Advantages of Duplex and Super Duplex Valves

Engineers specify seawater-service valves due to the following reasons:
- Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance
High molybdenum and nitrogen content blocks chloride attack at the disc edges, stem, and seat faces. These are the areas most vulnerable to crevice corrosion in valve assemblies.
- High Mechanical Strength
The yield strength of duplex 2205 is approximately 450 MPa, compared to 170 MPa for 316L. This allows engineers to design thinner-walled components without reducing pressure ratings. Thus, reducing weight in offshore topside applications.
- Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking
The ferrite phase in duplex steel interrupts crack propagation. Pure austenitic grades crack under the combination of tensile stress and chloride exposure. Duplex grades do not crack, which is a critical advantage in high-pressure desalination piping.
- Lower Life-Cycle Cost
In applications involving seawater service, a seawater grade butterfly valve can last twice as long as the 316L version. The reduction in replacement cost and downtime is important in offshore locations where maintenance is not easily accessible or very costly.
- Wide Operating Temperature Range
The grades 2205 and 2507 both show excellent performance starting from cryogenic temperatures up to 300°C. This range includes the pretreatment, RO, and post-treatment trains within one desalination plant without any alteration in the valve material specification.
Application of Seawater-Grade Valves in Seawater Systems
A seawater-grade valve appears across multiple seawater system types. Here are the three main project categories.
Seawater Desalination Plants
Desalination plants are the most challenging applications. RO high-pressure systems operate at 55–80 bar with brine containing over 40,000 ppm chloride. Butterfly valves control flow at every stage: from seawater intake and filtration to high-pressure feed and brine discharge. Super duplex 2507 is the standard material specification for high-pressure and brine-side valves.
Offshore and Subsea Engineering
Offshore platforms use seawater for firewater systems, ballast water treatment, and produced-water injection. These are continuous-duty, full-immersion or splash-zone environments.
Superduplex 2507 is the required material grade for seawater valves per NORSOK MDS D45 specification. This is important for North Sea and Gulf projects.
Coastal Water Intake and Outfall
Coastal municipal and industrial facilities use large-diameter butterfly valves for seawater intakes and cooling lines. These handle high flows at low pressure.
Duplex 2205 is suitable for most coastal water intakes. Super duplex 2507 is better for power plants where high temperatures increase corrosion risk.

Application: Industrial Usage, Water Industrial Usage, Household Usage
Conclusion
Seawater is an aggressive medium, which can damage conventional stainless steel valves. There are two types of valves capable of dealing with it: 2205 duplex valves and 2507 super duplex butterfly valves.
Is duplex stainless steel suitable for seawater? Yes, it is. But it must be based on the chlorine content in the seawater, temperature, and class of pressure.
If you use seawater under normal conditions, without aggressive chloride content and high temperature, it is reasonable to choose duplex. If you need an additional corrosion resistance in the environment, choose super duplex.
